What the numbers mean

Profit per order is the price minus the product cost and the other per-order costs (shipping, payment fees, packaging). It is what is left to pay for advertising.

Break-even ROAS is the return on ad spend at which a campaign earns back exactly what it cost. The formula is price ÷ profit per order. If an order sells for 50, leaves 20 of profit, then break-even ROAS is 50 ÷ 20 = 2.5. Every 1 spent must bring back 2.5 in revenue before you make money.

Max cost per order (CPA) is the same limit seen from the other side: you can pay up to your profit per order to win one customer. Above that, each order loses money.

ROAS for a real campaign is revenue ÷ ad spend. Cost per order is ad spend ÷ orders. Compare both with your break-even figures.

Worked example

A shop sells a lamp for 50. The lamp costs 20 and shipping plus fees cost 10, so profit per order is 20 and break-even ROAS is 2.5. A campaign spends 400 and gets 25 orders: revenue is 1,250, ROAS is 3.13, cost per order is 16, and profit after ads is 25 × 20 − 400 = 100.

Limits of this calculator

It looks at one order at a time. It ignores refunds, repeat purchases, taxes, agency fees and fixed overhead. If customers buy again, your real break-even ROAS can be lower than shown; if many orders are refunded, it is higher. Use the result as a floor to test against, not a forecast.

Next steps

Once you know your break-even, write ads that earn it. Our Ad Copy Writer drafts headlines and primary text, and How to Write Facebook Ad Copy That Gets Clicks covers the writing method.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good ROAS?

There is no single good number. A good ROAS is one above your own break-even ROAS, which depends on your margin. A product with thin margins needs a much higher ROAS than one with fat margins.

What is the difference between ROAS and ROI?

ROAS is revenue divided by ad spend. ROI looks at profit after all costs. A campaign can have a ROAS above 1 and still lose money once product and shipping costs are counted, which is why break-even ROAS matters.

Why is break-even ROAS price divided by profit per order?

Each order brings in the price but only keeps the profit per order after costs. Ad spend has to be covered by that profit, so revenue per ad dollar must be the price divided by the profit.
